Reading winger Glen Little is set to miss the start of the club's first-ever Premiership campaign as he is still struggling with a hamstring injury.
The 30-year-old former Burnley midfielder has sat out the last two weeks of pre-season training and will not be ready to face Middlesbrough this weekend.
Royals boss Steve Coppell told the club's official website: "Glen's recovery has been slower than we would have liked.
"I would love him to be fit and take his place in the team for Saturday, but he's got a lot of work to do to show he's ready to play Premiership football.
"It's a real shame because he's been our cutting edge, so I'd hoped he was out there and raring to go."
Meanwhile, Coppell is also hopeful of making at least one new signing before the transfer window closes, adding: "It's been so difficult.
"Hopefully we can bring one more in, but we will have to wait and see."
