Former United winger Coppell stepped into management at just 28 when he took the reins at Crystal Palace in June 1984, becoming the youngest-ever league manager at the time. Since then the 53-year-old has managed Manchester City, Brentford and Brighton as well as the Royals, with Sir Alex paying special tribute to Coppell's 24-year career in management. "In our game it's such a difficult profession, and to do it for 1,000 games shows how hard he has worked," Ferguson told MUTV in a clip posted on Reading's official website. "His success has been great and it's a wonderful achievement." Former United team-mate Bryan Robson added: "For Steve to stay in the game for such a long time and to get to 1,000 games is such a massive achievement."
