Doyle offered Coppell backing
28 Mar 2008 - 08:32:33
Reading striker Kevin Doyle has been handed the full backing of manager Steve Coppell, despite having not scored since early December.
The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international's last strike came in the 3-1 home win over Liverpool on December 8, but Coppell is well aware of Doyle's all-round contribution to the side.
He said: "I haven't spoken with him about it and his performances don't look as though they are being affected by it.
"He is missing chances, which is always a great sign, as if he wasn't getting those opportunities, you would question him more.
"His contribution to the team is still significant and I'm confident he will score goals. He is a natural goalscorer and an asset to the squad."
Doyle had earlier told the Evening Post: "It eases things if you are happy with your performances and if I wasn't playing well, I would be more worried about not scoring.
"But yes, I do need a goal. It definitely does play on your mind after about five games without scoring.
"As a striker you are always judged on the amount of goals you score and I'd like one sooner rather than later."
