Coppell dismisses quit talk

Reading manager Steve Coppell has dismissed reports that he has decided to retire in the summer after Monday's 2-0 win at Norwich City kept their dreams of automatic promotion alive.

The Royals head into the final round of Championship fixtures knowing they can sneak into the top two should results go their way following a brace of goals from Shane Long at Carrow Road.

However, Coppell has rubbished newspaper suggestions that whatever happens this season, he will walk away from the Madejski Stadium in the summer.

"I've had an awful lot of people congratulate me on my retirement and ask me my plans but it's absolute rubbish," he said.

"What would I do all day? It's a non-story.

"No one has any idea what I'll be doing this summer, not even me, but it's a nonsense to say that I want to walk away from football.

"I was manic depressive in February after we hadn't won in a month but no more than usual.

"We want to finish as high up the league as we can. We have a dog's chance of success but that's better than no chance."
