Ameobi dedicates treble to Robson

The 27-year-old, who had not scored since February, struck with 38th and 61st-minute headers, and then completed his treble from the penalty spot 15 minutes from time as the Magpies won at St James' Park for the first time under caretaker boss Chris Hughton. But on a day when Tyneside acclaimed Robson as anger over owner Mike Ashley's stewardship was briefly put to one side, Ameobi was quick to pay his own tribute. He told Sky Sports: "Considering the man in Sir Bobby Robson that we were remembering today - he was the man who brought me into the first team - and it's only fitting that I dedicate the hat-trick to him. "He started off my career and for me, it is a fantastic way to remember him." Despite relegation from the Premier League and the continuing uncertainty over the club's future, a crowd of 36,944 turned out at St James' for the opening home fixture of the campaign. Many swiftly turned their attention to Ashley, who sat in the directors' box alongside prospective buyer Barry Moat amid mounting speculation Joe Kinnear could return as interim manager should a sale not go through within the next week or so. But caretaker boss Chris Hughton, who confirmed Damien Duff is in talks with Fulham, could not have asked much more from the players that remain after a cull of high-earners which may not yet be over. Hughton, who was unaware of any significance to Moat's close proximity to Ashley, said: "What we wanted first and foremost was to win the game, and if we were able to do that by scoring goals and putting in a performance, that was certainly going to be a bonus. "We had good periods of the game against a very, very good passing side, and the first two goals were of the highest quality." Of Ameobi's contribution, he added: "He is a local lad and for any striker to come away with a match-ball is always a very, very proud moment for them. "The fact that he is doing it here at St James' Park just adds to it for him." Reading boss Brendan Rodgers was disappointed by the result, but insisted his players would learn from their experience on Tyneside. He said: "It's one we won't cry about. It was a great experience today here for the young players. "It [Newcastle] is a wonderful club with a big history and stature and it was good for my players to experience that, and we will be better."
