Whyte offers transfer assurances

Rangers owner Craig Whyte has assured fans that manager Ally McCoist has plenty of transfer targets this summer.

But he claims the Scottish champions will not be held to ransom as they set about bolstering the squad ahead of the new season. One player who was on McCoist's wanted list, Tomer Hemed, has snubbed a move to Ibrox in favour of Real Mallorca.

Whyte told the Scottish Daily Mail: "Ally has targets in mind and we are actively negotiating to bring in several new players. The fact Hemed has gone elsewhere is disappointing but we will not overpay for players. He was not our first choice anyway."

Whyte, who completed his takeover last month, added: "Rangers has no bank debt now. If I hadn't come in, Rangers wouldn't have gone bust. But they would have been forced to sell the best players and substantially reduce the wage bill."
