Whittaker in the mood for goals

The full-back contributed three strikes last term - against Kilmarnock, Hamilton and former club Hibernian - as Rangers went on to clinch a domestic double. The 25-year-old has offered quality, rather than quantity, in the past. And, although reasonably happy with his return since joining Rangers in 2007, he is keen to add more goals to his game once the new campaign gets under way. Whittaker said: "I was delighted with my first season, I think I got five goals. "In my previous seasons at Hibs, I'd only scored one or two goals each season. "So, to come here and get five in my first season, I was delighted with that. "I've managed to chip in with a few last season as well so hopefully that can continue." Whittaker has been one of Rangers' most versatile players during his two terms at Ibrox and added: "I used to play a lot further forward in right midfield or sometimes centre midfield in the youth team. "As I progressed into the first team, I found myself at full-back or right midfield and sometimes used on the left, as I have been here. "I found myself more of a defender when I broke through." Of the eight goals he has netted so far for Rangers, one stands out above all others. Whittaker grabbed all the plaudits against Sporting Lisbon in April last year when his superb solo strike secured a place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup after Jean-Claude Darcheville had opened the scoring on a memorable night in the Estdio Jos Alvalade. Speaking on Rangers World, Whittaker recalled: "That is a great memory of mine. "I just remember going on and the team had done so well to get themselves in the lead with 'Darche' scoring. "I remember the boy getting it in the middle of the field and I read where he was going and managed to get a tackle in. "I then just thought about getting the ball up the pitch and ran through and the guy I tackled came back at me and had a slide tackle but I managed to skip clear of him. "Then I went by their sitting midfielder and was through to the defenders. I had people to my left and "Once I went past him, it was me and the goalie and I managed to keep my cool and slot it past him. "It was a great goal and I was delighted we got ourselves into the semi-final."
