Weir starting to see Kyle's best

David Weir believes Kyle Lafferty took the first step towards showing he can be a success at Rangers with a fine display against Aberdeen.[LNB] The Northern Ireland international started the Scottish Premier League clash at Ibrox, with top-scorer Kris Boyd left on the bench, and grabbed the opportunity with both hands.[LNB]As well as showing flashes of the form that prompted Walter Smith to pay Burnley more than £3million for his services in 2008, he also claimed only his third goal of the season as the Scottish champions triumphed with a 3-1 win.[LNB]Weir knows better than most that Lafferty's journey as a Rangers player has not been an easy one, with injuries and indiscretions - such as his notorious feigned headbutt against the Dons last season which saw him branded a cheat - blighting his time in Govan so far.[LNB]The skipper famously gave Lafferty a half-time rollicking at Pittodrie in November because he was furious with the younger player's attitude.[LNB]But Weir believes last night's clash - ironically, against Aberdeen - suggested the 22-year-old may have finally turned a corner.[LNB]He said: "It's not easy coming to play for Rangers and he has only been here a short period of time. Sometimes it takes longer than others.[LNB]"Some of the great Rangers players took a little while to settle.[LNB]"Some people can hit the ground running and become Rangers players overnight but some players take longer.[LNB]"Kyle has got all the attributes to be a big success here.[LNB]"He wants to do better and he started on that road last night."[LNB]Lafferty's form - which has been described as "erratic" by boss Smith - has frustrated fans at times.[LNB]But Weir believes the response to his goal proves the Ibrox faithful are just as desperate as Lafferty is for him to fulfil his potential with the Light Blues.[LNB]Weir said: "You saw the ovation he got when he scored. The fans want him to do well and he wants to do well and it's just a matter of him putting all the pieces together.[LNB]"There is no doubt he has all the pieces, it's just a matter of him putting them all together now at the right time."[LNB]Lafferty's goal was sandwiched between strikes from Steven Davis and Kenny Miller, with Darren Mackie's consolation not enough to prevent Rangers from increasing their lead at the top of the SPL to 13 points and moving to within potentially two games of securing the title.[LNB]Davis was in fine form again, with a superb opener and a part to play in the other two goals, but it was Lafferty who stole the acclaim.[LNB]Weir said: "He deserved his goal, he put a lot into the game.[LNB]"It doesn't always happen for Kyle but he kept going and kept going in this game.[LNB]"He had a great run just before the goal and was unlucky that something didn't come from that. Great credit to him, he kept going and he obviously enjoyed it."[LNB]Rangers can win the title in the first game after the SPL split if they take maximum points from Dundee United next midweek.[LNB]Weir said: "It's getting closer for us hopefully but there is still a bit of work to be done.[LNB]"This was a big result for us after Saturday's game. To get a couple of wins quickly goes a long way but there is still some hard work to be done."[LNB]
