Weir braced for Malmo test

David Weir insists there is no chance of Rangers taking their Champions League qualifier against Malmo lightly.[LNB] The Scottish champions crashed out of the competition when they suffered a shock exit at the hands of Kaunas in 2008.[LNB]And, despite the safety net of a Europa League qualifier this time if they do lose out to the Swedes, Weir says every single Rangers player will be ensuring there is no repeat of that disappointment as they bid to take a step closer to booking their place among Europe's elite.[LNB]The skipper said: "I don't think anybody would take it for granted, I don't think it would be in anybody's interest to take it for granted.[LNB]"I don't think we took the Kaunas game for granted either. It was just a bad performance.[LNB]"That happens in football and it's up to us to make sure it doesn't happen again. That was three years ago and it's a different team, different players, different circumstances.[LNB]"Every year, teams go out to less-fancied teams but it's up to us to try to ensure that it doesn't happen to us."[LNB]He added: "We've had great experience of Europe in the past, we've had a lot of success and a lot of great games.[LNB]"We all love it as players, the European nights are special, you can't argue with that.[LNB]"Not many teams get the opportunity to play in the Champions League and we have been fortunate enough to do it for something like four out of the last five years.[LNB]"We wouldn't change it for the world. Although it makes your season busier and causes you a few headaches, they are all good headaches."[LNB]Malmo's domestic campaign is well under way, while Rangers were forced to settle for a draw against Hearts in their Clydesdale Bank Premier League opener at the weekend.[LNB]Weir said: "I'm sure they will think they have an edge but hopefully we will have a freshness from having a break and being so early into our season and being so eager.[LNB]"Hopefully we can use that to our advantage. It's whichever team plays well over the two games, I'm sure, that will get through to the next stage rather than other factors."[LNB]Meanwhile, Weir has welcomed the imminent arrival of Dorin Goian after Rangers agreed a fee with Palermo.[LNB]Boss Ally McCoist is hoping the Romania international will complete his move to Ibrox today as he attempts to boost his defensive options.[LNB]Weir said: "We've tried to get a few players in and it has been difficult so it's nice to see that they are starting to come and helping the lads who are already here.[LNB]"Competition is good and the more good players we have here the better.[LNB]"He comes with a good pedigree, as they other lads who have joined us have as well.[LNB]"The more good, quality international players we've got here challenging for positions can only be good for the club."
