Webster gives backing to Smith

Defender Andy Webster believes the news that Walter Smith is staying at Rangers will be met with unanimous approval in the dressing room.

Webster spent the last season on loan at Dundee United in a bid to regain his fitness following injury problems at Ibrox. But he is well aware of the success Smith delivered under difficult financial restrictions, claiming the SPL title and the Co-operative Cup.

And he was thrilled to hear the veteran boss has signed on for another year at Rangers to defend his crown. "It's important for the football club and gives us a bit of stability. The manager knows what it takes to win and I'm sure all the players are happy with it,? said Webster.

"The players who have worked under the manager for the last few years will all be delighted he is staying at the club."

Webster skippered United to third spot in the SPL and success in the Active Nation Scottish Cup.

And he was relishing the opportunity to continue that success at Rangers as he modelled the champions' new kit at Murray Park on Wednesday.

He said: "I had a great season last year and I'm looking forward to the season ahead.?
