We must get back on track - Smith

Walter Smith has urged Rangers to make amends for their defeat against Dundee United when they take on St Johnstone in Tuesday night's Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash.

The Scottish champions twice surrendered the lead at Ibrox on Saturday before eventually losing 3-2 thanks to a last-minute David Goodwillie winner.

"We had an opportunity to go top at the weekend and we slipped up," Smith said. "We've got nobody to blame for that other than ourselves. We need to get back to winning, whether it means we go top of the league or not."

He added: "We were disappointed to lose on Saturday. It was our third home defeat this season and one we know we have to make up for.

"It's a difficult task up at Perth. We lost quite heavily the last time we were up there and we need to improve in terms of not giving away goals as easily as we did at the weekend."

The loss to United cost Rangers the opportunity to move top of the SPL - a position they can now achieve with a win at McDiarmid Park before Celtic host Hibernian on Wednesday.

Smith added: "The media always ask these questions about opportunities to do this and that and the next thing.

"The game represents an opportunity to make up for a disappointment at the weekend - that's the biggest thing for us. If it takes up to the top of the league, fine, but we know we have to work extremely hard there.

"Celtic, if they win their game the following night, go back top again. It's a situation we know all about. We have handled it on and off over the last few years and what we all need to look at is that we need a run of wins.

"We lost the Dundee United game and we need to make sure we get back on track."
