Walter won't allow complacency

Wednesday night's win for the Scottish champions - combined with Celtic's defeat against Hibernian - allowed them to open up a huge gap at the summit.[LNB]Smith was delighted to see his side return to winning ways after battling for a draw against Hearts at the weekend, but sounded a note of caution that there is still a long way to go in the title race yet.[LNB]Rangers managed to claw back a significant deficit between themselves and the Hoops to triumph in the title race last term - and Smith warned there were no guarantees at this stage in the campaign this time either.[LNB]He said: "We have had a situation, over the last couple of seasons, where a seven-point gap has been overcome so you are never happy and there is a lot football to be played yet.[LNB]"We are happy to be at the top of the league but in no way does it mean anything other than we have to show a level of consistency and continue to get the results we have been getting."[LNB]Steven Davis netted his first goal of the season after just two minutes against Saints, before Nacho Novo sealed the win with a strike of his own late on to secure the three points.[LNB]Novo, Kenny Miller and Steven Naismith all made their returns from injury but Smith is still without key personnel, although he admits he can have no complaints about the efforts of his players when the odds are stacked against them.[LNB]He said: "We always work hard enough in the games. We have always got a good attitude from the boys.[LNB]"They seem to have a winning attitude and they don't like losing. Even when they are not at their best they usually grind out a result. The win was a good one.[LNB]"We have been stretched squad-wise since the new year but have still managed to gain results even when we've not been playing so well."[LNB]Saints boss Gus MacPherson admitted he feared the worst after losing such an early goal and praised his players for keeping themselves in the game until Novo's strike late on.[LNB]He said: "I'm disappointed to lose the game. Once again, we lost the early goal but credit to them for getting on with their jobs afterwards.[LNB]"In the second half we had many good opportunities and if we had got the equaliser, who knows?[LNB]"You always fear the worst after losing an early goal but we tried to play and it was better in the second half when we cut them open on a couple of occasions. But you have to take your chances at this level."[LNB][LNB]
