Walter expected to spend wisely

Rangers chief executive Martin Bain is confident manager Walter Smith will rebuild "wisely" ahead of the new season.[LNB] Smith has been given the green light to buy players for the first time in almost two years.[LNB]The Scottish champions have already witnessed the departures of Nacho Novo, who returned to Spain with Sporting Gijon, and Steven Smith who has joined Norwich.[LNB]Top goalscorer Kris Boyd has also confirmed he will quit Rangers when his contract expires later this summer, while other key personnel could part company with the Glasgow side in the weeks ahead.[LNB]Smith has not bought a new player since August 2008 but was assured cash will be made available to bolster his squad after agreeing to remain at the Ibrox helm for one more year.[LNB]Bain is now keen for fans to show patience as the process of targeting potential new captures gets under way.[LNB]He said: "Hopefully the fans will know that they have a management team in place that understands the football club and all we can do is ask for their patience because patience can be a great virtue in a transfer window.[LNB]"I am sure that the boys will rebuild wisely because rebuilding is what we have got to do."[LNB]Bain admits losing Smith and his backroom staff of Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall would have been a major blow after last season's Clydesdale Bank Premier League success.[LNB]But, now that their futures have been secured, he is keen to get preparations for the defence of their crown under way.[LNB]Bain told www.rangerstv.tv: "Someone often said to me in life that you must always cover your down side.[LNB]"And when we looked at the situation that Walter and his colleagues were going to leave, as they were, the down side from that would have been enormous had they left at the end of the season.[LNB]"So it was extremely important that they stayed for another year as they are Rangers men and none of them had the desire to walk away from the club.[LNB]"But now the planning starts for the new season and we have already had discussions as to how we will approach it going forward.[LNB]"These discussions are never easy at this time as there is an expectation from people as to what our plans are.[LNB]"But it's all work in progress and like all transfer windows things are not finalised until the last few weeks which is not ideal from a planning perspective.[LNB]"And with our squad being the way it is at this moment we need to really push that planning process along."
