Thomson vows to battle
17 Oct 2008 - 14:43:24
Rangers midfielder Kevin Thomson accepts that his place in Walter Smith's starting line-up could be under threat by captain Barry Ferguson's imminent return from injury.
Ferguson will play for the reserves against St Mirren next Tuesday as he steps up his comeback from the ankle surgery he endured in the summer.
Thomson knows that Ferguson's return is likely to put him under more pressure, with the former Hibs star saying: "I know I have to step up my game.
"I could have six great games, but only the seventh would be highlighted if I went off the boil. Barry went through the pain barrier for Rangers and wore his heart on his sleeve as he did it. I take my hat off to him for that.
"I don't think I've ever lived in his shadow but I have a tremendous amount of respect for him. Barry really looks as though he's enjoying training and his comeback will be soon.
"Now his name can be added to those of Pedro Mendes, Steve Davis, Charlie Adam, Brahim Hemdani and the rest competing for a midfield place."
