Thomson eyeing Brown reunion

The pair enjoyed a fruitful partnership at Hibernian before parting ways in 2007 to move to either side of the Old Firm. But while both began to hit peak form early this season, their careers have gone in different directions again. Brown collected the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award on Sunday, while Thomson is still working on his rehabilitation from the second cruciate ligament injury of his career. Thomson took time out of his fitness schedule to remind Rangers fans of Friday's season ticket renewal deadline - and send a message to George Burley that he is looking to launch his international career next season. Thomson made his first Scotland appearance in the goalless friendly against Northern Ireland in August and he believes he can forge a partnership with the Celtic midfielder. "He is obviously in the Scotland team at the moment so I would hope to try and get back fit and if that was to happen one day, I'm pretty sure we would do all right," Thomson said. The 24-year-old feels that, after a "patchy" start to his Gers career, he was showing the required form until his knee buckled in a 4-0 win over Kilmarnock in November. "It was great to see the light at the end of the tunnel and I was starting to fly," Thomson said. "Three or four weeks prior to my injury I was getting to the top of my game. "I certainly feel as though I was getting there but I still feel there was more to come." Thomson was delighted for his friend Brown for coming through a similar situation at Celtic. "He's a top player," Thomson said. "I have said that all along and finally he's getting the rewards that he deserves. "He has done very well this season. He took a lot of flak last year and had a difficult time. I think it shows great mental strength and character from someone so young. "People forget he's only 23. He's a top, top player and I'm sure there's plenty more to come from him." Brown returned the compliment and sees their partnership reforming in the dark blue of Scotland. "When he was playing early on this season he was playing brilliant," Brown said. "He would probably have been up for this award as well. "Hopefully, come a season or two, we can both play central midfield for Scotland." Thomson has earmarked the first day of pre-season for his return to full training but Rangers manager Walter Smith expects at least one player back for Saturday's Old Firm derby. Sasa Papac is hoping to come back into defence for the visit of Celtic while Kirk Broadfoot hopes to recover from a foot problem. "Sasa has a chance of being fit," Smith said. "He has a knee injury. We thought he would be fit for the Hearts game but he just failed to make it so I imagine he would be okay for Saturday. "Kirk Broadfoot is also back in training this week but whether he will be ready for the game or not we will have to wait and see how he progresses." Rangers 13/10, Celtic 15/8, Draw 11/5
