SPL fans love a tackle - Weir

Pedro Mendes became Gers' third man to be dismissed this season when he picked up two yellow cards in Saturday's goalless draw at Kilmarnock. Both teams finished a man light as Manuel Pascali saw red late on for the home side in a match which featured a total of nine yellow cards. Weir believes the Scottish public enjoy the defensive side of the game and that referees should only get their cards out for mistimed or poor challenges. "The Scottish public want teams who are aggressive and will make tackles but I don't think there was any malice," said Weir. "Our culture is for it to be like that and I hope it stays that way. "It seems we are reaching a point where we're getting yellow cards for things that are not - a wee bit like what sometimes happens in European games with foreign officials. "We all make mistakes every week - players make them so why should the ref be any different? But there must be a little common sense in there. "Refs are being assessed every week and get directives from the SFA and FIFA. There was not a bad tackle in the game yet we've ended up with 11 yellow cards. "I think Steve Conroy is one of the better ones in Scotland and he's someone you can talk to as a player. He's a top referee and officiates in Europe so I'm not going to stand here and criticise him. It is a hard enough job and he can stand and criticise me. We're all doing our best. "If you mistime a tackle or make a bad tackle you should get booked - I think players accept that. But there are a lot of yellows now that don't really merit the punishment. "If one comes out early you have people walking on a knife-edge throughout the game. Red cards are the last thing anyone wants to see as people come to the game to watch 11 v 11 and hopefully the better team wins on the day. "You've guys missing matches and teams reduced to 10 and that's not what people want to see."
