Rangers striker Daniel Cousin seems set to stay with the SPL leaders until at least next summer, having been linked with a return to France in recent weeks.
The 30-year-old has scored nine goals in 25 appearances this season for the Gers, including the winner in the 2-1 victory at Gretna on Wednesday evening.
Smith said: "Everybody keeps saying that players, not just Daniel Cousin, are being linked with teams.
"Does that mean if a club shows an interest in someone they leave Rangers? It doesn't. It just means that they show an interest in them.
"People can show any kind of interest they want in any kind of player, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are going to leave.
"Daniel is scoring some goals for us at the present moment and we are obviously happy to keep him."
