Smith ready for fixture congestion

Walter Smith insists Rangers will happily attempt to handle another fixture pile-up if it means they continue to battle on four fronts for silverware.

Rangers could again face four games in eight days as they bid to defend their SPL crown, while battling for the other two domestic cups and facing Sporting Lisbon in the last 32 of the Europa League.

"We've experienced it before. I wouldn't say we are worried, we are not worried until it happens," said Smith.

"There are quite a few cup games that can cause us a problem if we win them.

"Hopefully we will maybe have the problem but we will just have to wait and see how it goes.

"If we don't have the cup games, then the problem is alleviated. It's a difficult one to try and work out.

"It only occurred back then (in 2008) because the run took us right through to the UEFA Cup final. That was the biggest problem we had in terms of trying to fit in other games.

"If it happens again, we will be pleased that it's happened but we will just have to wait and see. If we look back to that time, the weather conditions caused a lot of games to be postponed and there were one or two other happenings.

"It would look as though, if a Scottish team does go to the final, there are other problems. There will always be this fixture pile-up. It could happen to anybody.

"I'm not quite sure what happened to Celtic when they went to the UEFA Cup final. I think they had one or two games to put in as well so it would look as though the Scottish teams would have that situation if they ever get a successful run in Europe."
