Smith poised for Ibrox exit

Published: 09 Feb 2010 - 09:39:24

Steven Smith has confirmed he is set to reject a new contract at Rangers but is determined to bow out with a treble. Smith, 24, has been offered a year's extension by the club but a lack of first-team football has all but convinced him to end his eight-year stay at Ibrox. Smith, who has started the last two matches in the absence of first-choice left-back Sasa Papac, told the Daily Record: "The club have offered me a year's extension but Walter Smith knows what my answer will be and it has nothing to do with money. "It's because I want to play. In an ideal world, I want to stay at Rangers but playing nine or 10 games a season won't help my career. "I wasn't disappointed with the offer. In fact, I was surprised they offered me anything at all. It will be difficult to move on. But I need to be playing every week."
