Smith hails battling Gers
24 Dec 2007 - 09:19:35
Walter Smith revealed he was proud of his players after ten-man Rangers held Aberdeen to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
The Gers missed the opportunity to move level on points with Old Firm rivals Celtic at the top of the SPL table, but boss Smith was pleased with the spirit of his side after they overcame the first-half dismissal of Lee McCulloch.
The Scotland international was sent off for an altercation with Aberdeen midfielder Scott Severin.
"We controlled the game when we had eleven players on the pitch and, even when we went down to ten, we were excellent and still created the best chances," claimed Smith.
"The sending off left us short as we had really good build up play up until that point.
"But I have to commend our players because they showed great determination throughout and a willingness to roll up their sleeves when it mattered.
"I think during the season we have shown that we can dig in and that was evident again today.
"We were unlucky not to get three points on the balance of play."
