Smith admits to mixed feelings
17 May 2009 - 11:08:06
Rangers boss Walter Smith admitted he was relieved to return to winning ways after Saturday's 2-1 victory over Aberdeen sent the Ibrox club back to the top of the SPL table.
The Gers' title hopes took a major knock following a midweek 1-1 draw with Hibernian which let Celtic back into the race.
But although admitting his relief at reclaiming a three-point lead at the summit with Celtic not in action on Saturday, Smith was disappointed not to have significantly improved their goal difference against the Dons.
"We were pleased to win the match," he admitted. "We'd have hoped to have got one or two more goals but we didn't do so.
"We were pleased to win in the circumstances. That was the most important thing."
Meanwhile, Smith played down the return to action of Barry Ferguson.
Ferguson was stripped of the club captaincy and banned following his much-publicised disciplinary problems while away on international duty with Scotland two months ago.
Smith explained: "He was fit to play and I felt he was ready to play. He hadn't played for seven weeks but he got some extra training over the last week.
"He was fit to play and that's why he was involved."
