Smith accepts Thomson red

Rangers boss Walter Smith has refused to criticise the referee who handed out a red card to Kevin Thomson in the 2-1 victory at Hearts.

Fit-again Thomson lasted just 13 minutes at Tynecastle, before referee Craig Thomson ordered his namesake off for a late challenge on Ian Black.

Smith said after the victory: "The challenge gave the opportunity for the referee to order him off.

"I didn't think there was any great contact with the player. From the dug-out area, we could see that. The player carried on for the rest of the game.

"A similar challenge had gone on just before that and the referee allowed that to go with a yellow card. I thought he might have done the same with Kevin."
