Smith urges Gers to make history
Glasgow Rangers boss Walter Smith has urged his current crop of players to make some history of their own at Ibrox.[LNB] The Scottish champions welcome Inverness to Ibrox on Saturday aiming to extend their winning start in the Scottish Premier League to 10 games, while remaining unbeaten in all other competitions, including the Champions League.[LNB]Former goalkeeper Andy Goram believes there is the same feeling of invincibility in the dressing room as he experienced as part of the Rangers side who went on an unbeaten run of 44 games in season 1992-93.[LNB]Smith was at the helm back then too but he says the players under his stewardship now should focus on what they can achieve, rather than what happened in the past.[LNB]"They have their own history to make," he said.[LNB]"In tomorrow's game, for instance, they are trying to take the winning start into double figures. They can create a bit of history by doing that.[LNB]"It's the one thing about this team - they will just try to continue to play as well as they can. That's all we have been trying to do and people have been making comparisons.[LNB]"But weren't we 'the worst ever Rangers team' last year at one stage? I don't think that was the case and I don't think we would make claims to be the best either.[LNB]"We will just continue to try to do what we are doing - winning the majority of games we are playing."[LNB]Inverness, themselves unbeaten on the road in the league since last November, were the last team to defeat Rangers in the SPL at Ibrox, claiming a a 1-0 win in March 2009.[LNB]"We didn't play well on the evening and they got a late penalty to win the game," Smith recalled.[LNB]"For us, it's a warning. It's been roughly a year since they lost away from home, they have come up from the First Division and brought that unbeaten away record with them and haven't lost in the early part of the season.[LNB]"I think their only away defeats have been in cup ties so it's a warning that we will have to be careful and try to continue the run of form we've had."[LNB]Rangers visit Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday but Smith has promised a strong team against Inverness.[LNB]He added: "We want to try to retain the championship if we can so the team we pick tomorrow will be as good a team as we can put out.[LNB]"We had a couple of players out of the League Cup game at Kilmarnock on Wednesday so we will have them back for tomorrow.[LNB]"We've got a reasonable group now and we can maybe look at leaving one or two out over future weeks because there are a lot of midweek games to come, if you include the international.[LNB]"It will be a difficult spell for us between now and Christmas and we'll need to leave a player out now and again but it won't be in tomorrow's game, we will be looking to play as strong a team as possible."[LNB]
