Smith unfazed by Commons move

Rangers manager Walter Smith insists the blow of missing out on transfer target Kris Commons has not been compounded by the fact the Scotland winger looks set to join Celtic.

The Gers' Old Firm rivals have had a bid for Commons accepted by Derby, little over 24 hours after Smith had confirmed his club had made an enquiry about the player. Debt-hit Rangers are unable to compete with their city rivals but Smith says Commons' destination does not make the disappointment any keener.

"It's just the fact we were in to try to get the player and we have not got him - that's the main thing," Smith said. "Where he goes after that is really immaterial. He's not coming to Rangers and that's what we would have liked to happen."

Smith is still trying to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday after losing top scorer Kenny Miller to Bursaspor last week.

"We're still having a look at trying to get someone," the Ibrox boss said. "So far we have not had anything that we feel will enhance us.

"We may still have the ability to bring in a player or two but there's nothing in the pipeline so far."
