Smith understands Boyd stance

The striker is out of contract at the end of the season but has yet to commit himself to a new deal with the Scottish champions.[LNB]The cash-strapped Glasgow club are looking for a new owner and Smith and his backroom staff are working without contracts in a bid to ease the financial pressure.[LNB]Doubts over Smith's own future at Rangers is just one of the concerns expressed by Boyd in an interview with the Times newspaper and the Ibrox boss believes the 26-year-old is right to monitor developments before penning a contract extension.[LNB]"I thought it was a good article from his point of view," said Smith. "When you read the whole article, he said he would love to stay at Rangers and would love to stay here for a number of years. I think that's a heart-felt one.[LNB]"He feels that he wants the situation at the club to be sorted out before he can commit himself. I think that's a sensible viewpoint for any player to take.[LNB]"I don't see anything wrong with that statement whatsoever. The majority of our boys here have had that hanging over them for over a year now.[LNB]"I think it's a fairly sensible thing for him to come out with."[LNB]Asked if he was resigned to losing Boyd in the summer, Smith added: "We don't know. As Kris said, it's very much wait and see.[LNB]"But, remember, it's wait and see for a lot of us who are here.[LNB]"He is being perfectly honest and I think that's the way a player would look at it, if he's taking into account an important stage in his career."[LNB]Boyd was quoted as saying: "I love Rangers and I want to stay here, but there is a cloud hanging over the club which makes everything uncertain.[LNB]"My hope is still that I will be in a Rangers jersey for years to come, but I have to say the club just doesn't feel secure at the moment.[LNB]"I don't even know who the manager will be next season and I've already had three managers in my time at Rangers.[LNB]"People say to me, 'Kris, just go and sign' but it's not as easy as that."[LNB]Strike partner Kenny Miller admits losing the SPL's record goalscorer would be a massive blow for Rangers.[LNB]He said: "I didn't see Boydy's article this morning but, if that's what Boydy feels, that's fair enough.[LNB]"He is in a position now where he has got decisions to make on his career. If he feels that's going to be part of it, that's up to him.[LNB]"Obviously I would be disappointed if he left, I think everybody at the club would. We know what Boydy brings to the team and he would be a big loss to the club if he were to go."[LNB]Meanwhile, Smith insists Sunday's Old Firm derby is a must-win game for Rangers, as well as Celtic.[LNB]Victory would allow the defending champions to restore their 10-point lead at the summit and put a massive dent in Celtic's championship bid.[LNB]Smith said: "It's a must-win game for us, never mind Celtic.[LNB]"We've got to go into the game hoping to win it. Both teams are exactly the same.[LNB]"There is a lot of football to be played before the end of the season so I don't say it's a must-win with regards to the championship because that would show a disregard to the rest of the teams in the league.[LNB]"There are quite a number of games to be played so it's too early for us to be making assumptions about championships.[LNB]"But, in terms of the Old Firm encounter, we must, as always, try and win."[LNB][LNB] Rangers v Celtic.
