Smith: McCoist is well prepared

Rangers manager Walter Smith believes Ally McCoist will be better equipped than most to deal with the challenges he may face as boss next season.

As well as the demands to deliver silverware and produce results on the park, McCoist could find himself with a number of other issues to contend with. Craig Whyte's proposed takeover remains ongoing, with the manager-in-waiting still unsure of what funds will be available to him until a buy-out is finalised.

He said: "He knows what he's taking over, better than anyone, and he is keen to do so. He knows that he just has to get on with it, in the same manner as we've had to do in the last few years."

He added: "So he is better prepared, I would think, than the majority of people who would maybe take over."

Rangers host St Mirren in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League on Saturday and have the opportunity to move top, with leaders Celtic in Scottish Cup action this weekend.

Smith said: "We can't afford any [slip-ups] now. I said after we lost to Dundee United that we had to try and go on a run of wins and we have managed to win our first three games after that one.

"It's something we have to keep going and we have to make sure we do that.

"We've lost more games at home than we have away from home so we have to make sure, in the final games of the season, we adjust to that aspect.

"There is a good edge to the games at the moment. Our last three have been good ones in terms of results for us but they have been exceptionally tight. We need to make sure we keep it going."
