Smith laments postponement

Rangers boss Walter Smith admits Sunday's postponement of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with Dundee United at Tannadice gave his players a much-needed break - but insists he would rather have played the game.

Smith's squad was stretched due to injuries, but snow and ice saw the game on Tayside cancelled. And with Old Firm rivals Celtic slipping up at home with a 2-2 draw against Inverness on Saturday it means Rangers hold a two-point lead with a game in hand.

Smith told RangersTV: "I don't think there was ever a chance of the Dundee United game going ahead."

He added: "Everyone was aware on Saturday that the weather forecast was such that the game wouldn't go ahead.

"However, we still had to travel up there - and we had a slightly long journey back.

"It took us about four and a half hours to get back.

"It was dangerous for people to travel, never mind the state of the pitch.

"From our own point of view we probably needed the break anyway having played in the Champions League on the Wednesday night.

"In saying that we would have rather played the game than not. We had prepared for the game and we were there but it wasn't to be."
