Smith in talks over new Gers deal

Smith's current contract expires in January and fears have been raised he might not be offered a contract extension due to the financial problems at the club. New Gers chairman Alastair Johnston is keen to hand Smith and his backroom team of Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall contract extensions and held preliminary talks over the weekend. "I want to give the current management team new contracts," said Johnston. "We are progressing with it and have held talks over the weekend. "The board and myself are very supportive of the continuation of the management team as it is in place. "That is our desire and we will be working towards these ends." Smith has refused to rush into signing a new deal with the Gers chief being unable to buy any new players in the last two transfer windows. "The chairman indicated he would want us to sign new deals but a lot of things have to be considered," said Smith. "A lot has been happening at the club and so there is a lot more to it than just saying okay and signing a new contract. "The direction we all want the club to take has to be considered as well as various other issues."
