Smith grateful for second chance

Now he is optimistic that the latest Glasgow derby can give him the happiest moment of his Ibrox career.[LNB]Smith spent a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a pelvic injury after taking part in a 1-1 draw with Celtic, when Brahim Hemdani struck a late equaliser.[LNB]Until last month, his only two appearances for Rangers since that game were cup ties against lower-league opposition.[LNB]But a raft of injuries and suspensions gave him an unexpected Clydesdale Bank Premier League comeback in a 3-1 win over Motherwell last month.[LNB]Smith has kept his place ahead of Saturday's crucial Old Firm game at Ibrox, giving him the chance to reacquaint himself with Celtic two-and-a-half years on.[LNB]"Maybe five or six weeks ago I never thought I was going to get a chance of playing again," Smith told Rangers World.[LNB]"With these massive matches coming up, everyone wants to be involved. I think I've given myself a chance with the way I've played."[LNB]The 23-year-old added: "I'm obviously really excited. When I last played, Celtic were so far in front I don't think there was realistic chance of winning the league.[LNB]"This one is different, we are right on their tails so it's going to be a massive occasion.[LNB]"I think when you grow up being a Rangers fan and playing for Rangers, the biggest games are always Old Firm games and they're the ones you look forward to.[LNB]"I think this one coming up has an extra bit of bite to it because it's obviously going to be a massive game in deciding where the title is going to go, so it's one we're all looking forward to."[LNB]Smith had many dark days during his lay-off and the long wait to force his way back into the first team when he eventually returned to fitness.[LNB]"There's always a glimmer of hope that you'll get involved but realistically I thought it wasn't going to be involved," he said.[LNB]"Then, all of a sudden, injuries and suspensions mount up so I'm glad I've got my chance.[LNB]"When you play for the reserves it's mentally tough because you're not playing in front of big crowds and you're going to play in places like Shotts.[LNB]"But getting through the games is really important to get your fitness up."[LNB]Smith added: "It's hard to play at the top level when you have not played for such a long time.[LNB]"Game by game I feel I will get there but all I can do is give 100 per cent. I don't think anyone can have any complaints if that's what I do."[LNB]Smith has been employed in midfield in recent weeks but could return to left-back as Sasa Papac remains on the sidelines.[LNB]The former Murray Park trainee is not fussy though after such a long wait for a chance to face Celtic, and he is unconcerned about the quality of football, as long as Rangers overturn their one-point deficit.[LNB]"When you play Old Firm games, I think it's who wants it most, it doesn't matter who plays nice football," Smith said.[LNB]"It's about who wins tackles and headers. We'll just be going out to win every battle on the park."[LNB][LNB] Rangers v Celtic. Click here to bet.
