Smith: Ferguson back to his best

The Ibrox skipper enjoyed a starring role against Hamilton at the weekend, claiming the only goal of the game - his first of the season - as well as producing an excellent performance. Smith hopes his captain is now hitting top form at the right stage of the season after struggling to meet his own high standards when he returned from ankle surgery earlier in the campaign. "He has been playing well for the last month and he is starting to pick up," said the Rangers boss. "He was out for a period of time in the early part of the season and it was always going to be difficult to come back, when you take into consideration that the whole team started the season slowly. "But I think he has been playing exceptionally well in the last period and he played well on Saturday. "He is starting to play at the top of his game again. "You could see signs of that in spells of games that we've had and that was his most consistent performance for us since he came back. "Hopefully, he can continue that for the rest of our games this season." In fact, Smith has had no complaints about his entire team in recent weeks as they prepare to host Inverness ine the Scottish Premier League on Wednesday night. Despite trailing Celtic by seven points at the end of December, Rangers now sit top of the SPL on goal difference with renewed hope of winning the championship. Smith said: "We have been playing steadily for the last couple of months. "We have been as steady and consistent as we have been at any stage and hopefully that will continue over the last part of the season as well." Inverness star Filipe Morais knows what it is like to win at Ibrox and is eager to sample another victory at the home of the league leaders. The Caley Thistle playmaker was part of the Hibernian team, led by John Collins, who beat Rangers at the start of last season, inflicting their only home defeat of that campaign. And, after moving to the Highlands in January, he is desperate to pull off another shock result in Govan. He said: "I've had some great experiences of playing against Rangers; they're just amazing games to be involved in and hopefully the rest of the lads are the same. "You need to go there with confidence. If you go there with fear, you're always going to get battered. "It's hard to dominate them but if have belief in the team, which we will have, you never know what can happen. "We have to make sure we're organised and know what we are doing at all times, being on our toes for the full 90 minutes and I'm sure the gaffer will make sure of that. "The league is so important to us and we can't afford to take any game lightly. "We've got the cup tie on Saturday and a great chance of reaching a semi-final at Hampden, but the Rangers game comes first and our focus is only on getting something from this one."
