Smith: Fergie keeps defying logic

Manchester United remain on course to win five trophies this season after adding the Carling Cup to the Club World Cup already residing at Old Trafford. Smith, himself, took Rangers to within touching distance of a quadruple last season, before being forced to settle for the League Cup and the Scottish Cup. But, having worked with Ferguson at close quarters during a short spell as his United assistant, Smith would not be surprised to see his fellow Scotsman defy the odds with a clean sweep of silverware. "He just continues to defy logic in terms of winning a number of trophies," said the Rangers manager. "I've always thought really highly of him. "I thought he would have decided to pack it in a few years ago but he made his decision to stay on and his drive and determination is as great now as it has been at any time. "As they head towards those number of trophies, I think they will get even more determined. "You could see it in the squad how much it meant to them, even some of the younger ones, to win the League Cup at the weekend. "The drive and determination to win five trophies is there, certainly from the manager it is. They are having a fantastic season up until now. "It would be an extraordinary achievement. "But, if any manager can do it, it's him. And, if any team can do it, it's Manchester United. "They have an opportunity. There are a lot of games to be played and a lot of difficult ones to overcome. "But, certainly, there is no person or team better equipped to do it." Smith believes Ferguson's ability to blend youth with experience has been the secret behind his success. He added: "That has been part and parcel of his management all through his career, when you consider that he played a number of young players along with a good level of experience when he was at Aberdeen. "He has strived to get that at Manchester United and he has been prepared to buy younger players and look ahead. "At times, he has been prepared to make big decisions in moving on bigger players to make space for younger ones and that is maybe what separates him from the rest of us."
