Smith coy over Rangers future

Manager Walter Smith was glad to leave aside on-going speculation about the Ibrox club's future ahead of Rangers' Champions League clash with Bursaspor in Turkey to contemplate a revenge mission 36 years in the making.

Smith was part of the Dundee United team which lost 1-0 to the Turkish club in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1974 which saw them exit the tournament. His Rangers side go into their final Group C game with their Europa League place secured, but the proposed buy-out of the Govan club by Scottish tycoon Craig Whyte was again on the agenda.

Smith was reluctant to discuss reports Whyte wants him to become director of football at the Ibrox club or join the board when he steps down at the end of the season, although as for any possible future at Rangers he said: "It certainly wouldn't be in any sort of footballing position."

However, the former Scotland boss perked up when asked by one local journalist about his last visit to the city.

Smith said: "Obviously I hope we do better than the did do in that game. It was a long time ago and we didn't get the result we were looking for at the time. So hopefully we can do a bit better."

The last time Rangers dropped down to European football's second tier competition they reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 2008 only to be beaten 2-0 by Zenit St Petersburg in Manchester.

Striker Kenny Miller insists the Ibrox men should have nothing to fear when the draw is made for the last-32 of the Europa League.

The Scotland international said: "Three seasons ago the team went all the way to the final and that was a fantastic achievement.

"It will be a hard act to follow but I think on a home and away basis we will be a match for anybody."
