Smith confirms Commons interest

Rangers manager Walter Smith has confirmed his interest in Derby and Scotland winger Kris Commons. Commons is out of contract with the Rams in the summer and has been involved in lengthy negotiations over a new deal at Pride Park. Smith said: "He's someone we are interested in trying to get. We've made an enquiry and we are in talks with Derby to see what the situation is." Smith last week revealed that he was on the look-out for two loan deals following the departure of Kenny Miller to Bursaspor. But he refused to rule out an instant move for 27-year-old Commons. Miller's contract was due to expire in the summer so Rangers accepted a fee of around £400,000 to allow the striker to depart early. And they will also boost their finances if Blackpool sell Charlie Adam, with Rangers due a sell-on fee for their former midfielder. Smith said: "It's the same as Kenny Miller with him being out of contract in the summer. I don't do the deals, [chief executive] Martin Bain carries out that job. He was in discussion with them this morning but I've not had anything back yet."
