Smith - And now, the end is near...

Walter Smith admits he will be "effectively retiring" after he takes charge of his final Rangers game on Sunday. The 63-year-old took the acclaim of the Ibrox support on Tuesday night after a 2-0 win over Dundee United put Rangers on the verge of a third consecutive Clydesdale Bank Premier League title. He has previously corrected people who assumed he was retiring when he was leaving Rangers, pointing out he was only stepping down from his current job. But Smith, who rejected an approach from a Barclays Premier League club last summer, admits it would take a special opportunity to keep working after Rangers close their SPL season at Kilmarnock. He told the Rangers News: "I am effectively retiring. If someone wants to offer me an opportunity I can't stop them from doing that, but it would need to be something I really wanted to do." However, the former Scotland and Everton manager could find staying in the game hard to resist. "I love going in on matchdays and the highs and lows they bring, so I will miss that a lot over the next few months," he added.
