Sir Alex issues Smith plea

Sir Alex Ferguson has urged new Rangers owner Craig Whyte to ensure outgoing boss Walter Smith remains at the club in some capacity.

Smith brings down the curtain on his second spell at the Gers on Saturday afternoon when the Scottish champions aim to secure the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title at Kilmarnock. He will be replaced at the helm by Ally McCoist but Manchester United boss Ferguson believes he still has plenty to offer.

He told the Scottish News of the World: "The first thing the new owner should do is ask Walter to stay on in some capacity, he should make that a priority."

He added: "It would be beneficial for Craig Whyte to have someone like Walter inside the club giving him advice."

Meanwhile, on-loan Blackburn player El-Hadji Diouf has expressed sympathy for Neil Lennon.

Diouf previously clashed with the Celtic boss - who has been the target of parcel bombs and was attacked by a Hearts fan in midweek - during an Old Firm derby.

But he said: "I feel for Neil Lennon because a manager should not have to put up with what he has had to this season.

"It's not right. People should remember football is just a game."
