Seven more held in riots probe

Officers took five men and two teenagers into custody on Tuesday morning in a co-ordinated operation between the Greater Manchester, Strathclyde and Lothian Borders forces.[LNB]All seven were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and were being taken to Chadderton police station in Greater Manchester for questioning.[LNB]They are a 29-year-old man from Airdrie, a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy, both from Ruchazie, Glasgow, a 42-year-old man from Dalkeith, a 27-year-old from Haddington, East Lothian, a 20-year-old man from Shotts and a 24-year-old from Airdrie.[LNB]Tuesday's arrests bring the total detained so far this week to 12, after five were held on Monday and bailed until June pending further police inquiries.[LNB]Five other men have been arrested over the last six weeks in connection with the trouble.[LNB]They are a 44-year-old police officer from Essex, a 30-year-old man from Glasgow, a 42-year-old from Cumbernauld, a 20-year-old from Manchester and a 34-year-old man from Chorley, Lancashire.[LNB]All are bailed until June 2.[LNB]An estimated 150,000 Rangers fans travelled to Manchester for the UEFA Cup final with Zenit St Petersburg last May 14.[LNB]Many had been drinking heavily all day before rioting broke out when a screen in the largest fan zone failed before kick-off.[LNB]Gangs of fans had running battles with police, showering officers with bottles and bricks. Police launched Operation Gale to find the culprits, with officers analysing thousands of hours of CCTV pictures to identify hooligans caught on camera.[LNB]Police appealed for anyone with information about the violence to call the dedicated Operation Gale hotline on 0161 856 4034.[LNB][LNB]
