Rooney goal puts Rangers out

Wayne Rooney`s late penalty ensured Manchester United secured qualification to the Champions League last 16 with a 1-0 win at Rangers, which sends the Scottish side out of the competition. In a tight opening it was Rangers that had the first chance of the evening, but Kenny Miller headed wide. Sir Alex Ferguson`s men came into the game and could have led but Nani poked over, while Rooney, making his first start since his much-publicised contract saga, also headed off target. Miller had another opportunity to give the hosts the lead, but he was denied at a narrow angle by Edwin Van der Sar when a pass seemed a better option. Rooney sent a free-kick just wide after the break as United dominated, while Michael Carrick was denied by a good save from Allan McGregor. United eventually won it when Steven Naismith fouled Fabio and Rooney tucked the resulting penalty home, meaning Rangers are unable to surpass Valencia, who beat Bursaspor 6-1, and will go into the Europa Leaue.
