Rangers urged to wait for Madjid offer

Rangers fans believe the Scottish champions should hold out for an offer in the region of £6million for Madjid Bougherra if he finds himself courted by other clubs.

The defender, 27, appears to have bolstered his chances of a move away from Ibrox this summer, following a starring role for Algeria against England at the World Cup.

Bougherra is contracted to Rangers until 2012 and supporters insist he should not be allowed to move for a meagre sum if he continues to impress in South Africa. Arsenal have been linked with a £6million bid for the centre-half - a figure the Ibrox faithful believe Rangers should be seeking.

John Macmillan, secretary of the Rangers Supporters Clubs, said: "In this day and age, Bougherra is worth that. In today's climate, that's a reasonable asking price."

He added: "He's a good player and whether we will be able to hold on to him is another matter now.

"If Algeria go any further in the World Cup, it will be a big stage for him. I think he will be a very difficult one to hold on to.

"We are probably bracing ourselves for the worst and an offer will come for him to go to the Premiership or, certainly, one of the top Championship clubs."

With Danny Wilson also linked with a move to the Premiership - Liverpool have expressed an interest in the teenager - Macmillan believes Rangers would be wise to recruit David Weir for another year if Bougherra does quit.

The veteran centre-half celebrated his 40th birthday last month but proved he is still capable of competing at the highest level after being named player of the year by both the Clydesdale Bank Premier League and the Scottish Football writers. He has yet to agree a new contract but Macmillan says the continuity Weir would be able to provide could be important following a summer of change.

He said: "It's ironic to look back on last season and see that Weir, at his age, was the only player who played in every game in the SPL. He can only last for so long but he is a very respected professional and looks after himself both on and off the park. He is an example to all the younger players coming through."
