Rangers have confirmed the signing of Swedish midfielder Mervan Celik.

The 21-year-old has joined the Scottish champions on a three-and-a-half year deal after passing a medical on Friday.

Celik was a free agent after leaving GAIS and becomes Ally McCoist's first signing of the January transfer window.

Celik has been given the number 24 shirt last worn by Madjid Bougherra but has not yet gained international clearance, meaning he will not be available for Saturday's Clydesdale Bank Premier League game against Aberdeen.

However, he should be free to face Hibernian next Saturday, depending on match-sharpness.

Speaking earlier on Friday, McCoist revealed how he expected the young player to make a big impact at Ibrox.

He said: "He's very direct and very, very competitive.

"He can get by people, he can score goals. He can certainly play wide and we've seen him go through the middle as well.

"He's an all-action player that hopefully the fans will take to. More importantly, he will be a goalscoring threat when we get him in the team."

Celik became a free agent when his contract expired at the end of the Swedish season, although his former club were entitled to compensation for the player
