Kenny McDowall tendered his resignation as caretaker manager of fallen Scottish giants Rangers on Monday.
The 51-year-old has quit for personal reasons but will serve a 12-month notice period under the terms of his contract, as his predecessor Ally McCoist was due to do earlier this season.
McDowall, who joined the club's coaching staff from bitter rivals Celtic in 2007, succeeded McCoist when the former Rangers striker quit the troubled second tier club on December 21 and was placed on leave.
"Kenny McDowall has tendered his resignation as caretaker manager of Rangers Football Club, citing personal reasons for stepping down," a Rangers statement read.
"Kenny, who has been a fantastic servant of the club, will serve his 12-month notice period, during which time he will remain 100 per cent committed to his normal duties.
"The club respects Kenny's decision and he will continue to have the full support of everybody at Rangers."
McDowall's resignation comes against a backdrop of a bitter battle for control of the club involving Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, who owns shares in Rangers, and several other interested groups.
Rangers are also struggling to keep pace with Championship leaders Hearts in the race for automatic promotion to the Scottish Premiership.
