Rangers back at the summit

Rangers returned to the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League for the first time since Boxing Day with a 2-0 win over St Johnstone. Walter Smith's men had squandered the opportunity to leapfrog rivals Celtic to the summit at the weekend but returned to winning ways in Perth. Kyle Lafferty, back in action after recovering from a knee injury, opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he pounced on a short headed pass-back from Danny Grainger before rounding goalkeeper Peter Enckelman and slotting into the back of the net. Rangers doubled their advantage with 83 minutes on the clock when a flick-on from Nikica Jelavic was met by Steven Naismith and he rifled low past Enckelman to seal the win. Jelavic could have put the gloss on the victory with a ferocious shot that smacked off the underside of the crossbar before Naismith nodded the rebound wide. Saints have now gone eight SPL games without a victory - and have not scored in seven of them.
