Miller: Points more important than goals

19 April 2010 08:07
Kenny Miller may have reached the 20-goal mark - but he insists another win for Rangers was far more important as they close in on the title.[LNB] Kyle Lafferty set the ball rolling at Ibrox, before Miller converted from the penalty spot to secure a 2-0 win over Hearts that means the Scottish champions can secure the SPL title next weekend against Hibernian, or even beforehand if Celtic lose to Dundee United.[LNB]And Miller insists there were no hard feelings with fellow striker Kris Boyd, whose own goal drought continued after being withdrawn just minutes before the penalty award.[LNB]He said: "I'm over the moon, firstly with the win and to get on the scoresheet again was good.[LNB]"Boydy is the penalty taker but once he has gone off, I've stepped up and that's the way it went. There were a few candidates wanting to take it off me but I wanted to put it away for that 20th goal.[LNB]"You've got to do it, whether you are a secondary striker or whatever. As any sort of front player, you've always got to chip in with goals.[LNB]"Boydy is chipping in with 25, 30 goals every season so it's nice for him to have somebody up there who has chipped in with more than the 13 I got last year.[LNB]"It's a milestone that's always thrown at strikers, a 20-goal season. I've fallen short of it quite a few times and it's nice to get there.[LNB]"But it's secondary to the three points to get that 11-point gap back."[LNB]Celtic ensured there would be no title party at Ibrox after securing victory over Hibs 24 hours earlier and Miller admits a win against Hearts was crucial for Rangers after being held to a goalless draw at Dundee United midweek.[LNB]He said: "It was an important game and important to get back to 11 points after the Celtic result.[LNB]"It wasn't great stuff in the first half but, as we have shown over the past few months, we have been able to dig in. In the end, we could maybe have had a couple more goals."[LNB]Despite the defeat, Hearts sit just four points behind Motherwell and Ismael Bouzid believes European football next season is still within their grasp if they can muster a late push in their remaining games.[LNB]"I try to be positive," he said. "We have four games and that's a lot of points. If we win the four games, we can do something. We must take it game after game.[LNB]"We must forget the second half and be positive for the next game. We will see what happens after the last game."
