Miller: Final could be key to season

14 March 2009 11:13
Striker Miller and defender Weir are expected to start against arch-rivals Celtic at Hampden in a game that will decide the destiny of the season's first major trophy.[LNB]Miller and Weir reckon the clash has more significance than that and could impact on the race for the SPL title and Rangers' bid to retain the Homecoming Scottish Cup.[LNB]Miller said: "I think it is a massive game for us because whoever picks up the trophy will land a lot of momentum for the rest of the season."[LNB]With Celtic already out of the Scottish Cup, Rangers will be expected to hold onto the trophy they won last May.[LNB]They currently trail their city rivals by three points in the SPL and Weir said of the title race: "Potentially, whoever wins on Sunday could gain the psychological advantage.[LNB]"Celtic are three points ahead of us in the league and in pole position and whatever way the game turns out on Sunday, they'll still be top.[LNB]"But the winner will get the belief that they can beat the other team and that may have an effect on the season.[LNB]"The potential for us is there to win a treble. But for us to talk about that just as Manchester United talks about winning a quintuple is premature with so many games still to be played."[LNB]Weir, who is out of contract at the season, added: "I don't think you can rule out anything in football. Until the end of the season comes and we see where we stand, there's not much to be said.[LNB]"I think at both Rangers and Celtic - until you know who wins the league - no-one knows what will happen."[LNB]For Miller, Sunday represents his first chance for some silverware since rejoining Rangers last summer.[LNB]The Scotland striker is hoping his fine record for Scotland at Hampden - seven of his 11 international goals have come there - will stand him in good stead.[LNB]"I've always love playing at Hampden at club or international level," he told Rangers TV.[LNB]"It's a fantastic arena when there's a sell-out crowd and I have a lot of good memories there.[LNB]"I scored my first goal for Scotland there against Iceland and it's just a great place to play football.[LNB]"You don't need any extra motivation for a match like a cup final against your biggest rivals.[LNB]"We all know what the occasion will mean to both sets of fans.[LNB]"But, for me, there is that extra incentive of having the chance to win my first trophy since I came back to Rangers last summer."[LNB][LNB] Scottish CIS Cup.
