Mendes close to Gers exit

Portugal international Pedro Mendes is on the verge of leaving Rangers and signing for Sporting Lisbon.
Gers boss Walter Smith has confirmed that a transfer fee has been agreed for the 30-year-old former Tottenham and Portsmouth midfielder.
"The move suited all parties," confirmed Smith. "From the player's point of view, he is keen to be playing in the second half of the season to push for a place at the World Cup.
"We're well covered in that area, so it made sense for all concerned. While it doesn't suit us to lose another player, we appreciate his circumstances. It could free up a bit of money, with the wide areas giving us most problems."
Meanwhile, Jerome Rothen has joined Paris St Germain on loan.
