McInnes questions Old Firm quality

The Saints boss says the Scottish champions and Celtic still unquestionably have the best players in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League. But the former midfielder - who spent five years at Ibrox - feels his old club no longer has the same level of talent they had when he played alongside the likes of Brian Laudrup and Paul Gascoigne in the 1990s. McInnes said: "Rangers and Celtic still have the best squads but I don't know if they've got that real star player, with no disrespect to the players playing at the moment. "I look at Rangers just now and they have a lot of options middle to front and a lot of quality and, for me, both sets of the Old Firm are still much stronger than the rest of us. "But it's not say on any given day that you can't go and win the game. Both have dropped points already this season. "We know if we play well and play to our capabilities, we can pose both sets of the Old Firm problems. "Hopefully that will be the case on Saturday, although the Old Firm always ask more questions of you because they are geared to win their games every week." While the Old Firm are keen to quit the SPL for the Barclays Premier League, McInnes is just as determined to remain in Scottish football's top flight after winning the Irn-Bru First Division last season. He said: "I was honest and realistic enough at the start of the campaign to say I felt we would be fighting for survival. I think we will finish in the bottom six, it's just whereabouts in the bottom six. "If we ultimately finish 11th this season, and we are an SPL team next year, it's been a successful campaign with a view to kicking on the following season. "But we want to be better than that, it's not a great ambition to set your players to finish 11th. "We want to do it with a bit more style and not be fretting going into the last couple of games. We want to be as high up the bottom six as we possibly can. "The signs are there that the players think they are good enough and hopefully that can continue. Having been seven years out of the SPL, it's important we establish ourselves there."
