McGregor benched by Smith

Rangers manager Walter Smith has warned his players that he will make changes if he feels that their standards have started to slip.

Goalkeeper Allan McGregor was left on the bench for the 2-1 win over Motherwell on Sunday, with Neil Alexander handed an unexpected starting spot.

Smith told the Daily Record: "I have a big squad and every one of them has to show me that they are at the top of their game.

"Allan was exceptional last season, but I feel there are times when I have to utilise my pool to the full.

"I need to keep a keen edge on the squad and I can do that because we don't have the same number of domestic and European matches to play as we had last season.

"What has happened to Allan McGregor will happen to more than just him before the season is over."
