McGregor: Gers in no-win situation

Allan McGregor claims Rangers are in a no-win situation in Europe after their goalless draw at Old Trafford sparked criticism of their tactics.[LNB] Rangers manager Walter Smith employed a 5-4-1 formation to secure a point against Manchester United in their opening Champions League encounter.[LNB]McGregor barely had a save to make as Smith employed an even more defensive formation than the tactics that helped them to the UEFA Cup final in 2008.[LNB]Rangers perhaps face a greater challenge at home to Bursaspor on Wednesday as the onus will be on them to attack the Turkish champions.[LNB]But Smith is unlikely to take many risks after his side lost 10 goals in three Ibrox defeats in the competition last season.[LNB]And McGregor will make no apology if his team-mates succeed without entertaining.[LNB]"I know our team has had a bit of criticism for playing like that but to go away to Manchester United and get a draw is great for the club," the Scotland keeper told rangersfc.co.uk.[LNB]"If we had opened up and lost 4-0 we would have been criticised even more, so it's a lose-lose situation.[LNB]"When you look at Braga, they went to Arsenal and conceded six. If that happened to us we would have been slaughtered.[LNB]"You can't win with some folk. If punters or people in the press want to moan about it, we're not really bothered.[LNB]"We'll just stick to our jobs and hopefully that can take us quite far in Europe this season.[LNB]"On our way to the UEFA Cup final we used a 4-5-1 formation in a lot of the games and it worked in our favour.[LNB]"We managed to keep it tight at the back and score on the breakaway. So if we can do that again this year, then great."[LNB]With Nikica Jelavic ineligible and James Beattie ruled out with a hip injury, Rangers will again rely on Kenny Miller up front.[LNB]Miller has netted 10 times in six league games this season and former Rangers striker Kevin Drinkell believes he can continue his unprecedented goalscoring streak in Europe despite playing up front on his own.[LNB]"He has responded to that role," Drinkell said. "It means if there are any chances, Kenny is going to be the one in there.[LNB]"In a more fluent system, it might be Kenny that is running the channel and crossing the ball.[LNB]"If they only create two or three chances, then the chances are Kenny is going to be on the end of those."[LNB]Drinkell, who was promoting his autobiography, Drinks All Round, believes Miller is relishing the responsibility following Kris Boyd's departure.[LNB]"He has been a player who will have seen himself as a channel runner, a worker for the team, happy to get a dozen goals a year," he said.[LNB]"Now there is an onus on him and he is revelling in it. The more he scores, the more he will want to score."[LNB]
