McDowall: Trust in Smith
Kenny McDowall has told Rangers fans to ignore Celtic's busy recruitment drive and have faith in Walter Smith getting players in.[LNB] The cash-strapped Ibrox club have yet to see a new summer signing - indeed Rangers' last incoming player arrived almost two years ago - whereas their Old Firm rivals had confirmed six new signings by the times they jetted to Portugal this morning for the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Sporting Braga.[LNB]Hoops boss Neil Lennon is working on at least two new other deals but Rangers first-team coach McDowall is confident manager Smith will shape the squad he wants to defend the Scottish Premier League title over the coming weeks.[LNB]Speaking in an interview being shown tonight on RangersTV, former Celtic reserve-team coach McDowall said: "We're trying hard to get new faces in.[LNB]"Hopefully that will happen shortly but, in the meantime, we've just got to keep working away.[LNB]"I understand why people want new players to come in now but we've still got five weeks of the transfer window to go.[LNB]"That's quite a length of time and as the end of that period closes in, things generally start to get a bit busier.[LNB]"I'm not saying we're going to wait until the fifth week to start signing people because I know the manager is constantly working hard on getting new players.[LNB]"We're hopeful something will happen soon. In Celtic's case, they have European qualifiers coming up whereas we don't have a competitive game until August 14.[LNB]"At the end of the day, we try not to get too involved in other people's business and we are just concentrating on what's going on at our place."[LNB]Focus has shifted on to the Ibrox youngsters who have found themselves promoted.[LNB]Andrew Little, John Fleck, Jordan McMillan, Ross Perry, Grant Adam, Jamie Ness and Andrew Shinnie - all aged 21 or under - are with the squad for their Australian tour.[LNB]Some have played more than other both this summer and during last season - but McDowall claims it is up to the Rangers youths to show their worth.[LNB]"Our situation just now means there's an opportunity for the younger players to come to Sydney with us and show the manager what they're all about," the former St Mirren striker said.[LNB]"They need to show they can step up to the plate and one or two of them have been about the group for a couple of years now anyway.[LNB]"They know what we're looking for and it's a big chance for them. They should do their best to make the most of it."
