McCulloch: We need to build on point

ee McCulloch admits there is a long way to go yet before Rangers can say they have proved their doubters wrong in the Champions League.[LNB] The Scottish champions headed into this campaign desperate to make amends for a poor showing in the competition last year which saw them finish bottom of their group without a single win.[LNB]They made a decent start this time around by holding Manchester United to a goalless draw at Old Trafford in a match which, on paper, represented their toughest test in a section which also includes Valencia and Bursaspor.[LNB]The result may have restored some pride for Scottish football in the wake of disappointment for the rest of the SPL clubs in Europe this season - but McCulloch is well aware Rangers have many more tough challenges to face in the months ahead.[LNB]He said: "I think if you are going to prove people wrong you need to wait until the end of the campaign but we've certainly had a good start and hopefully we can build on the point.[LNB]"Last year it was the home games that we struggled in a little bit and I think the home games are going to be vital.[LNB]"The home form is going to be important but we've got the team spirit and the game-plan to be hard to beat, it's just about opening up and beating teams on home soil. I'm sure with the backing of the fans we will hopefully get the right results.[LNB]"We are going to be confident that we are going to do better than we did last year. "It's going to be tough. It is early days, it's only one game and we have a few tough games to go."[LNB]Much was made of Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to make 10 changes from the weekend draw at Everton for the visit of Rangers on Tuesday night.[LNB]Asked if his team selection was disrespectful towards their visitors in any way, McCulloch said: "I don't know, you would need to ask their manager. We can only do the job against the players were are playing against.[LNB]"We've done that, we've done well, and we have stuck to the game-plan. If they make 10 or however many changes, it's nothing to do with us.[LNB]"I think we did surprise a few people. Everybody was saying we were going to get rolled over and that it was a foregone conclusion that they were going to win by three or four.[LNB]"But we showed character and stuck to our game-plan and came out with a positive result and we are happy with the point."[LNB]Most of the pre-match focus was on Wayne Rooney and his return to the United side after being left out of the squad last Saturday following allegations about his private life.[LNB]But McCulloch felt the attention surrounding the striker made no difference to Rangers on the night.[LNB]He said: "The Scottish press are always going to write about what we do and how we perform as a team. Maybe it took the pressure off their players a little bit, I don't know. We are just happy with the point and going on from here."
