McCulloch ready to step back

Lee McCulloch will have no qualms moving back into the Rangers defence for Tuesday night's Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with Inverness at Ibrox.

Walter Smith will be without stopper Madjid Bougherra who is suspended while right-back Steven Whittaker is a doubt with a badly-bruised toe, as is left-back Sasa Papac, who has a groin complaint.

"If those three lads are out then it would be a blow but if the manager asks me to play there then no problem, I will go back and give it my best shot," former Wigan midfielder McCulloch said.

"I would be more than happy. I wouldn't say I really enjoy it but I would do my best."

While McCulloch is happy to utilise his versatility for the greater good, he is still trying to play down the popular perception that he is a converted striker.

He said: "Everyone keeps saying that I used to be a striker but I was a striker for one season under Billy Davies at Motherwell and it wasn't even for the whole season.

"I have played centre midfield for most of my career, that's where I started out playing."

Inverness boss Terry Butcher believes leading scorer Adam Rooney is focused on the job in hand despite speculation linking him with a transfer.

The former Rangers defender insists no offers have been made for Rooney, who is out of contract at the end of the season, but called for the striker's future to be determined.

He said: "We're focused on the Rangers game and I'm sure Adam is as well. Adam has not shown any signs of being preoccupied by all the transfer talk and speculation."
